Physics Puzzle Games: How to Think Before You Draw
By the CrazyArcade team ·
Physics puzzles ask you to change the world and then let gravity do the rest. You draw a road, remove a block or dig a channel, and the game simulates what happens next. They are satisfying because the solution is visible, but frustrating when objects behave differently from what you expected.
These tips apply to most drawing and physics puzzles, with examples from games in our catalog.
Watch first, then draw
Before touching anything, look at where things start, where they need to go and what is in between. In Draw a Road, the car drives exactly along the line you draw, so a bridge that is slightly too short or a ramp that is too steep will fail. Picture the car on your line before you draw it.
Gentle slopes beat steep ones
Objects in physics games pick up speed on slopes. A gentle curve keeps a ball or car under control, while a steep drop sends it flying past the target. In Line to Goal: Draw The Path you draw a line that guides a soccer ball into a goal, and later levels add wind zones and icy surfaces that change how the ball moves, so plan around them instead of drawing straight at the goal.
Order matters when you remove things
Some puzzles are about taking things away rather than adding them. In Jail Drop 3D, tapping a block makes it disappear and everything on top falls. The goal is to bring a prisoner down to the grass without hurting him, so the order of your taps is the entire puzzle. Remove the blocks that slow his fall last, not first.
Guide liquids with care
Water and sand puzzles follow the same logic but spread out. In Put Out The Fire you dig channels with a pickaxe to bring water to burning plants. A channel that opens in the wrong place lets water escape where it is not needed, so dig the shortest safe path and avoid opening extra routes.
Treat failure as a test run
Most physics puzzles have a quick reset. Use it. The first attempt shows you how the objects actually behave in that level, which is information you could not have known before. Experienced players expect the first try to fail and use it to measure speeds and distances.
